THE INVOLUNTARY MONUMENT

KORO, the national institution for curating, producing and activating art in public space, has previously suggested  a competition for a work which can enter a dialog with Fiskerne. In the brief they ask: «How does Fiskerne fit into today’s narrative about Norway, sixty years after to was completed? How does the new context affect the meaning of the work? What characterises Norway as a nation today and which voices should be allowed to express their perspectives?» Looking through the windows of the grey edifice on Johan Nygaardsvolds Plass one might suggest that the artwork KORO is asking for already exists.

Thought the display windows of The Picasso Boxes, we see both Fiskerne and the steel structure needed for their transit. Within their current display structure, the reliefs are not only framed as static artworks and historic artefacts, but as objects in flux. The presence of the red steel vessel enriches the mnemonic abilities of the reliefs. By letting the framework continue its life on Einar Gerhardsens Plass, the intervention seeks to spark a dialogue between the artwork’s past and future.
